Large living rooms lend themselves to a variety of uses in one space. Cozy sitting areas next to generously proportioned fireplaces invite conversation. A furniture grouping with the entertainment center as a focal point offers a spot to watch the game or the latest DVD release. Instructions

  1. Paint

    • 1

Minimize the space by painting in dark shades rather than pastels.

    • 2

Use neutrals to allow art and wall hangings to pop.

    • 3

Apply paint like Valspar's faux textured stone to give the wall interest and texture.

    Art

    • 4

Group four large paintings in a similar theme above an oversized couch. Arrange them symmetrically to form a square or next to one another spaced evenly above the sofa. Frame nine large vintage movie posters and arrange them in three rows of three.

    • 5

Draw the eye with a large wall sculpture in the center of the wall. Match it to your decorating style. These are available in a variety of materials like wrought iron, glass, copper and wood. Peruse specialty shops, online sites like Pottery Barn as well as flea markets and craft shows.

    • 6

Display a collection around a large item with the same theme. For example, in a country-style room, group rustic folk art signs around a large quilt. For a coastal decor, arrange shell collections mounted in shadow boxes around a surfboard. To evoke an English country manor, surround a large tapestry with fox hunt prints and items like riding boots, helmets, jackets and crops.

    • 7

Highlight family moments with an extensive grouping of family photographs.Use enough photographs to cover a large portion of the wall. Frame them in matching frames of different sizes and arrange them across the wall, in three or four rows. The size difference will give them a random, casual look.

    • 8

Suspend Amish-style straight-back chairs on the wall as art. Hang them from pegs. Let their simple lines speak for themselves.

    Shelves

    • 9

Build wooden shelving across the entire wall and from floor to ceiling. Fill the shelves with books for a library feel. Lean a library ladder against the shelves.

    • 10

Cover the wall with stacked stone, custom installed to include random stone shelves.

    • 11

Position an electric fireplace in the middle of the wall and flank it with book shelves.

    • 12

Install wainscoting three-quarters of the way up the wall and top with a narrow shelf known as a picture rail. Use it to display photographs and collections.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create your own wall sculpture with found items like copper tubing, wrought iron fencing and driftwood.

  • Don't hang mirrors on a large wall. They create the illusion of space.

  • Be sure that all wall hangings are securely fastened.
