How to Write an Essay on Personal Interests & Career Goals
Essays on personal interests and career goals are very different from the typical essay. Essays that cover personal interests are often referred to as personal essays. Career goals often fall under the same category because they are goals that are personal to the individual and might not always be interesting to others. These essays are similar to other essays in the basic layout and format, but different from other essays due to the personal nature of the topic and amount of research required.

1
Write out all of the interests and careers goals. Interests will often vary and individuals might have a few career goals based on interests and indecisiveness. Having a clear list of all interests and goals can make the essay easier to write.
-
2
Research the career and interests that relate to the career goal. Interests that are not related to the career goal should be discarded from this essay to avoid confusion and make the essay more cohesive. Research should include information about the career like statistical data on salary, the work done in the career or historical information on the career. Research on the interests should include how the interest can be related to the career, historical information about the interest and facts that are not commonly known.

3
Write a thesis. Unlike other essays, a thesis for a personal essay on interests and career goals should be in first person. It should state clearly why the interests relate to the career goals and why it is interesting. Essays of a personal nature should give some opinion.
-
4
Write an outline to support the thesis. The outline should be formatted to have at least two or three supporting paragraphs for the thesis. These paragraphs should incorporate research and give support to the opinions about the interests, career goals and how they relate. Add a few personal experiences to emphasize the interests.
-
5
Write a rough draft. It should be based on the outline with the thesis in the first paragraph. Unlike other essays, this type of essay should be in first person due to the nature of the topic. Support the opinion with facts and personal examples.
-
6
Check for spelling mistakes and that the essay complies with the instructions for the specific essay. When writing a personal essay, it is often easy to write too many words for the instructions. Check that the essay does not exceed the word limit. Editing is important to any essay and especially important for personal essays about interests and career goals.
-
7
Rewrite the essay. A final draft should be written on the appropriate paper or computer according to the instructions for the essay.
