How to Get a Job in SWAT
Special Weapons And Tactics, better known by the acronym "SWAT," employs paramilitary style tactics and both lethal and non-lethal weapons and methods to diffuse dangerous situations and arrest suspects. Being a SWAT team member takes a certain type of person. SWAT teams in various metro areas are comprised of police officers who apply for the job and pass rigorous testing in order to earn their spots on their respective teams.

Apply to your local police academy if your local police force employs a SWAT team. Be advised you must meet certain qualifications for academy admittance. Terms for acceptance vary from department to department. Consult a department representative or ask a local officer for further information.

Complete one full year of full time police duty following graduation from the academy without any negative incidents on your personal record. Apply to the SWAT team academy when the start of the academy is announced.

Complete a battery of physical and psychological testing. A premium is placed on being of sound mind and body. Answer all questions administered in the polygraph test truthfully.

Pass the physical testing and firearms training that culminates at the end of academy training. The best applicants will be entered into a pool from which candidates for additional testing will be drawn. Complete the training to exacting standards to earn a place on the team.

Tips & Warnings
A degree in criminal justice from an accredited college or university may increase your candidacy for SWAT team consideration.
