How to Hook Up a Trendnet Router With a DSL Modem

A DSL, or digital subscriber line, carries data over a phone line, which is converted to high-speed Internet via a DSL modem. The modem only allows one user to connect to the Internet at a time. However, when you hook up a Trendnet wireless router to a DSL modem, more than one user can connect simultaneously to the Internet via wireless and wired methods.

    • 4

Open a Web browser and type in "192.168.10.1" in the address bar, then press "Enter" to access the router's utility.

    • 5

Type in "admin" as both the username and password, then click "Login."

    • 6

Click "Wizard," which is the last button on the left menu.

    • 7

Click "Next" to start the wizard, then enter a new password for accessing the router utility. Click "Next" again.

    • 8

Select the time zone you are in from the drop-down menu, then click "Next." Do not change anything in the next screen, just push "Next" again.

    • 9

Click the option for "Obtain IP automatically (DHCP client)," then press "Next."

    • 10

Click the option for "Enable" next to "Wireless LAN." Also change the SSID to your desired wireless network name (for example, "My Wireless Network"). Leave the channel to whatever it is already set to. Press "Next" to continue.

    • 11

Click "Restart," then let the router utility reload. After it is done reloading, click "Wireless" from the left menu. Under that button, click "Security."

Select the Authentication type for your wireless security from the drop-down menu. If you select "WEP," select the option for "Open System." Then for mode, select "Hex" from the drop-down menu. If you choose a 64-bit WEP key, you need to enter a 10-character password consisting of 0-9, a-f, and/or A-F. If you use a 128-bit WEP key, you need to enter a 26-character password with the same parameters. If you select "WPA" authentication type, select "PSK," then "TKIP" next to "Cipher Type." Etner a passphrase that is at least eight characters long.

Click "Apply," then exit the router utility. The Trendnet router is now configured for use with the DSL modem.

Tips & Warnings

  • To connect your computer to the wireless network, double-click on your wireless utility icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop. (It looks like a computer with a signal coming out of it.) Select your SSID from the list of available networks, then enter the security key when prompted.
