How to Attach Tassels

How to Attach Tassels thumbnail
Attach tassels quickly using embroidery floss and a needle.

Embellish valances, curtain tiebacks, lampshades, table runners and even clothing with gorgeous tassels made from silk yarn or embroidery floss. Once you add a tassel to something, the finished effect instantly becomes elegant and charming. Whether you make your own tassels or purchase them ready-made, the process of attaching tassels to your project is simple enough to accomplish quickly. The most difficult thing about working with tassels may be selecting just the right one to embellish your decorating projects.

Things You'll Need

  • Embroidery floss (in a color to match the tassel)
  • Scissors
  • Upholstery needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 24-inch length of embroidery floss with the scissors.

    • 2

Thread the needle with the embroidery floss and pull the floss through to make a double strand on the needle. Tie the ends of the embroidery floss in a double knot.

    • 3

Separate the fringe of the tassel and insert the needle up through the center of the tassel. Push the needle through the wrapped portion of the tassel and direct the needle back out through the head of the tassel.

    • 4

Loop the needle back around to catch the wrap in the embroidery floss and insert the needle back up through the center of the tassel again. This secures the length of embroidery floss to the tassel (and the embroidery floss will be undetectable because it matches the tassel).

    • 5

Push the needle straight up through the top of the tassel and pull the length of thread out completely. This makes a tight connection within the head of the tassel.

    • 6

Insert the needle through the object you want to attach the tassel to and pull the thread through until the tassel butts up snugly against the object.

    • 7

Take a small stitch with the needle and poke the needle back down through the object again.

    • 8

Tie the embroidery floss off with a secure double knot and cut the excess embroidery floss with the scissors to finish attaching the tassel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your tassel already has a tie strand attached to the top of the tassel, thread this strand through the upholstery needle and use it to attach the tassel to your project.
