Homemade Rabbit Bedding

Homemade Rabbit Bedding thumbnail
Homemade rabbit bedding is a way to save on the expenses of keeping a rabbit.

The material chosen to use as homemade bedding for your rabbit needs to withstand the "nibbling" of the rabbit and has to be non-toxic. Do not use walnut shavings--this wood is toxic to small animals. Additionally, do not use any products which are scented or treated, as this may cause respiratory problems for the rabbit. The bedding should be absorbent to soak up the urine and messes made by the rabbit.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the unprinted ends of the newspaper reel from the local newspaper.

    • 2

Cut a six-inch section of the newspaper off the roll.

    • 3

Cut this section into one-half-inch strips.

    • 4

Continue with steps 2 and 3 until you have enough newspaper strips to adequately cover the bedding area of the rabbit hutch.

    • 5

Place the bedding in a pile away from the area the rabbit uses to relieve himself.

    • 6

Change the bedding every few days to keep the area dry and clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use less bedding in the summer to help the rabbit from overheating.
