How to Convert an XLS File to DBF

Convert XLS files to DBF.

Microsoft Excel is the process many people use to manage information stored in an orderly manner. At some point, that information probably has to be analyzed or used in some way. For example, as a business owner, you may use Excel to maintain a listing of customer information. That information can be used to set up a marketing campaign. A marketing campaign usually originates from a database. This necessitates converting your Excel (XLS) file into a database file (DBF), which is used in the database program dBase.

Things You'll Need

• dBase 2.6 or later
• Microsoft Excel (2000 or later)

Instructions

1. Open dBase, and either create a new database or open an existing one. Click on "Import." A pop-up box opens with the phrase "Importing data from Excel" at the top.

2. Choose the Excel file you want to convert by clicking on the button to the right of the form box. If you wish to merge Excel information into the dbf file, click on "Import data into current (opened) database file." Click "OK."

3. Choose "Import data into new dbf file" instead, if you wish to create a new dbf file altogether using the Excel information. Then click "OK."
