How to Replace Car Speakers for a 2001 Grand Am

While your Pontiac Grand Prix came from the factory with speakers installed, you may want to change them, either because the originals have become worn out or damaged, or because you want to enjoy better sound quality from aftermarket speakers. The process of replacing speakers may seem daunting if you haven't done it before, but it's a job that the average enthusiast can handle without too much difficulty.

Instructions

  1. Dash speakers

    • 1

Open the car's glove box and remove the 9/32-inch screw on the lower side of the dash panel--this is above the glove box.

    • 2

Remove two 9/32-inch screws on the lower side of the dash panel, located above the instrument panel in front of the steering wheel.

    • 3

Lift and remove the upper dash panel. This may require some force to release the panel from the clips that hold it in place. Move the panel out of the way when it is loose.

    • 4

Peel back the foam over the speakers and remove the four Phillips screws holding each speaker in place. Pull the speakers out, grasp the connector on the back and pull to unplug the speaker.

    • 5

Plug the new speakers in and screw them into place. Reassemble the dash.

    Rear deck speakers

    • 6

Place a panel tool under the front edge of the speaker grille on the rear deck. Pry upward to remove the grilles.

    • 7

Remove the 3/32-inch screws holding the speakers in place. Pull the speakers out of the openings and unplug the connectors on the back.

    • 8

Plug the new speakers in, place them in the openings and screw them in place. Replace the speaker grilles.
