How to Replace a Dryer Vent Cover
A dryer vent cover that is damaged or showing wear will need to be replaced. The outside dryer vent is what most people think of as the dryer vent cover. The outside vent "covers" the end of the dryer exhaust. The vent cover is part of a unit consisting of a small length of metal pipe with a mounting hood. The pipe inserts through the wall and attaches to your dryer duct hose. Dryer vents are available at home improvement centers in a wide variety of colors and styles to complement your home. Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Utility knife
- Replacement vent cover
- Drill with bits
- Silicone caulk
- Caulk gun

Pull the dryer away from the wall far enough to allow you room to work. Loosen the screw securing the dryer duct hose clamp to the dryer vent with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the dryer duct hose off the dryer vent.

Go to the outside of the house. Remove the screws securing the dryer vent to the house, using a Phillips screwdriver. Insert the utility knife blade between the dryer vent and the wall of the house. Cut the caulking around the perimeter of the vent. Grab the vent and pull it straight out of the wall.

Insert the new dryer vent into the wall. Mark the mounting hole locations with a pencil. Pull the vent away from the wall. Drill pilot holes for the retaining screws, using an small drill bit.

Insert the vent into the wall. Secure it with retaining screws, using a screwdriver. Caulk around the perimeter of the vent. Load a tube of silicone caulk into the caulk gun. Cut the application tip at an angle, using the utility knife. Press the trigger of the caulk gun to apply a bead of caulk. The caulk will prevent water from getting into the seam and inside your wall.

Go back inside the house. Slide the dryer duct hose over the dryer vent. Tighten the clamp screw to secure the duct hose to the vent. Push the dryer back into its working position.
