How to Fix a Corrupt Windows XP
From time to time, the system files in Windows XP can become corrupted, leading to problems such as system instability, problems running software and even trouble starting the computer. If this has happened to your Windows XP computer, you can repair and replace the corrupted files by performing a Repair Installation. This function repairs and reinstalls only the Windows system files, so your data and programs remain intact.

Start your computer and open the boot menu by pressing the key shown on the screen as the one that launches the boot menu. Usually this key is the F12 or the Delete key.

Insert your Windows XP CD and then choose the "Boot from CD" option. Press any key when prompted.

Press the "Enter" key at the welcome screen and then press the "F8" key (so long as you agree to the installation terms and conditions).

Select your Windows XP operating system and press the "R" key. Windows XP automatically starts the Repair Installation process. This process can take up to an hour to complete. Once it finishes, you can log back in to the computer.

If your computer came with Windows XP pre-installed, you'll need to obtain your installation CD from the manufacturer if it was not included with your system.
