How to Install an Operating System on an Acer Aspire After Replacing Hard Drive
An operating system is the system that runs the computer. The most common operating system is Windows, which is made by Microsoft. The Acer Aspire laptop would have had this system installed natively, but if you replaced the hard drive, it will have no operating system. Installing a new operating system may look tricky, but you don't need a degree in computer science to pick and install a new operating system. Find an operating system that you'd like to install on your new hard disk. You don't have to install what it had on it previously, you can choose a new operating system if you'd like to play and experiment with one. If you were comfortable with the old operating system that was on the laptop, you can it install that on the hard disk.

Use Windows XP or another Windows version as your operating system. Windows is the most common operating system used on portable computers like the Acer Aspire. It offers support from Microsoft if something goes wrong with the Acer Aspire. With Windows, you won't have to work as hard to find drivers for your Acer Aspire.

Download and try a version of Linux. Linux is an open source operating system meaning that you don't have to pay for it or any of the open source software it comes with and uses. There are thousands of different distributions of Linux, but when you find one you want, it will probably run more smoothly than Windows XP on the Acer Aspire because Linux is a lighter operating system and doesn't use as many resources. The downside to using Linux as opposed to Windows is that if something goes wrong with the system, you're on your own when it comes to fixing it. Microsoft will support its operating system because you paid for it, but Linux is free and comes with no support. This will have to be something to factor in when you consider which operating system you want to install.

Give Solaris a whirl. Like Linux, Solaris is an open source operating system, meaning that it is free to use for as long as you want to use it. The difference is that there is only one version of Solaris, and it is supported by a company named Sun Microsystems. If something goes wrong, Sun will help you with the operating system. Oracle Solaris is a paid version of the operating system that you can purchase and run on your Acer Aspire; it will contain additional support from Sun Microsystems.
