How to Convert AVI Movies Into MP4 Format Using Windows for iTunes

Save

Rather than spend money on a video converter, the iTunes program on your Windows PC can be used to convert videos. The software is primarily a media manager but it's also a video converter that converts unprotected videos in your iTunes library to MP4. The MPEG-4 format is supported for video playback in iTunes as well as on Apple products including the iPhone, iPod touch and newer models of the iPod nano and iPod classic.

Things You'll Need

  • iTunes 8 or later
  • Click "Start" on the taskbar, then click "All Programs" and "ITunes" to open iTunes on your Windows PC.

  • Click "File" at the top of the iTunes window, then click "Add File to Library" from the sub-menu. Alternatively, press and release the "Ctrl" and "O" keys on your keyboard simultaneously.

  • Click the "Videos" tab under the "Libraries" section in the "Add to Library" window and click the AVI file. Click the "Open" button to add it to iTunes.

  • Click the "Movies" tab under the "Library" section in the iTunes sidebar, then click the AVI movie file.

  • Click "Advanced" at the top of the iTunes window, then click "Create iPod or iPhone Version" in the sub-menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your AVI files have DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection, which is used to protect the movie from being copied or illegally shared, you can't convert them to MP4 using iTunes.
