How to Clean Mildew in Tile Grout

Mildew in tile grout can be an irritating problem.

Nothing ruins the appearance of tile faster than dark mildew growing between the tiles on the grout. It can be quite difficult to rid tile grout of stains and mildew, even with regular cleaning and the use of grout sealants. The porous nature of grout means that it can easily absorb water, which can ultimately lead to mildew. Mildew thrives in warm, moist conditions like those found in bathrooms.

Things You'll Need

• Scrub brush with stiff bristles
• Mild bathroom cleaner
• Soft cloth
• Baking soda
• Vinegar
• Toothbrush
• Hydrogen peroxide

Instructions

1. Scrub your tile gently using a stiff-bristled scrub brush and a mild bathroom cleaner (either store-bought or a homemade solution of soap and water) to remove as much dirt, debris and mildew from the tiles as possible before concentrating specifically on the grout.

2. Rinse the tiles well with water, and dry using a soft cloth.

3. Mix baking soda and white vinegar together to make a thin paste; apply the paste to the grout using a toothbrush and scrub well. Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.

4. Mix hydrogen peroxide and baking soda into a paste; let the bubbles subside and apply to any remaining mildew stains. Allow this solution to remain on the grout for 10 minutes before scrubbing with a toothbrush. Rinse with water and dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Only use the hydrogen peroxide solution on white or light-colored grout, as it works as a bleaching agent.

• Chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach can whiten stubborn mildew stains on white grout.

• Always clean in a well-ventilated area to reduce fumes.

• Wear rubber gloves when dealing with any household chemicals.
