As simple as it sounds, replacing a battery in a Palm device isn't as intuitive as it could be. And performing this incorrectly can lead to the loss of all data. Note that this will not work on the Palm V, which has a rechargeable battery that cannot be replaced.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Perform a HotSync operation to back up the latest data in your Palm handheld.

  2. Step 2

Open the back battery cover and remove the existing batteries.

  3. Step 3

Replace with new batteries, making certain you correctly place the batteries according to the positive (+) and negative (') signs. Do not follow the springs for battery placement!

  4. Step 4

Wait a few seconds, and then turn on your Palm device.

  5. Step 5

If you've lost any data, perform a HotSync operation to replace it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your Palm device will stop powering up long before you've lost all battery power. Instead of allowing you to run your batteries dry, the Palm handheld stops turning on and uses the remaining battery power to retain your data. A Palm without enough power to turn on will hold on to your information for weeks.
  • If you are replacing batteries in a dead Palm device, wait a minute or so before turning it on.
  • If your device doesn't boot up, double-check to see that the batteries are installed properly.
  • If your device still doesn't boot up, you may need to reset it.
  • If you've already received a low battery warning and won't be able to replace the batteries soon, try not to use the backlight or beaming capabilities. Both of these drain the battery at a slightly accelerated rate.
  • Palm devices without any batteries can't save your information at all. Once you take the batteries out of your Palm device, be sure to replace them immediately; you can lose your data in minutes!
  • Palm devices are incredibly conservative in their battery usage. You'll find you get weeks to months of usage from one pair of batteries. If your batteries are draining rapidly (in a couple of weeks) something could be wrong with your device.
