How to Convert an XLR File

XLR is file extension associated with Microsoft Works Spreadsheet files for version 6.0 to 9.0. Your best bet to convert an XLR file is to open it in Microsoft Works, which is preinstalled on most Windows computers. Then you can re-save the file as the format to which you want to convert it. In Microsoft Works 9, you can save files as an Excel workbook, text file or an older version of a Works spreadsheet.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Works Spreadsheet 6.0 to 9.0
  • Open Microsoft Works Spreadsheet.

  • Click "File, Open."

  • Select "Works 6.0-9.0 (*.xlr)" in the "Files of Type" list.

  • Open the folder that contains an XLR file you want open. Locate the file and click "Open."

  • Click "File, Save as."

  • Click the "Save as Type" drop-down menu.

  • Select the file type to which you want to convert. Select "Works 4.x/2000 (.wks)" to save as an older version of Microsoft Works. Select "Excel 2007 Workbook (.xlsx)" to open the file in Excel 2007" or "Excel 97-2003 (.xls)" for an older version of Excel. Choose "Text, Tabs (.txt)" or "Text, Commas (*.csv)" to convert to a text file.

  • Choose a destination folder and click "Save."

  • Open the new file in a compatible program, such as Excel, word processor or text editor.
