Overclocking can be an effective way to increase the performance of your computer hardware by spending little or no money. It pushes your hardware beyond its specified limits while retaining working order. Applied properly, overclocking can keep your system running on par with newer hardware, or save you from buying more expensive hardware initially, yet still giving similar performance. Many ASUS motherboards have overclocking capabilities that you can configure from the motherboard’s BIOS. The BIOS is the Basic Input/Output System used by motherboards to detect and configure all connected hardware.
Restart the computer.
Press the "Delete" key on your keyboard as the system is starting up to open the BIOS. The Delete key is used to open the BIOS on most ASUS motherboards, however, there are exceptions. Reference your motherboard manual if Delete is not the appropriate key.
Navigate through the BIOS menus looking for menus referencing hardware, “tweaker” or overclocking. You’ll need to use your keyboard to navigate; a legend is displayed on the screen at all times to assist you. If you’re unable to find the appropriate menu, or if you’re unsure whether your motherboard has overclocking options, reference your manual.
Overclock one piece of hardware to your desired specifications. If the system becomes unstable, you only need to reverse the settings, or fine-tune the hardware until it achieves stability.
Exit the BIOS, opting to save any changes.
Repeat the above steps for each piece of hardware you wish to overclock.
Tips & Warnings
- Some hardware is designed with overclocking in mind; reference the manufacturer’s website for information on how to do it best.
- Motherboards come with various levels of overclocking configurability; a specialized or “tweaker board” will have a plethora of overclocking options while a standard motherboard will only provide the basics, if any.
- If you do not have access to your motherboard manual, you can obtain information about it on the ASUS website; it typically has a digital copy available for download (see Resources).
- Improper configuration may stop the system from booting up entirely. Reference your motherboard manual or the ASUS website for instructions on what to do should you encounter this problem. Do this before attempting any overclocking.
- Overclocking can significantly increase the ambient temperature of your hardware; improper cooling or configuration can result in system instability or possibly permanent damage.
- Pushing hardware beyond normal limits shortens its lifespan and voids most warranties.
