How to Repair a Master Boot Record
A Master Boot Record (MBR) is a file that is used to control the startup of a Windows XP computer. If this file is corrupted, your computer will fail to start up properly. With a Windows XP installation disc, you can repair the MBR and enable your computer to start up properly again.

Restart your Windows XP computer (or turn it on if it is off).

Put your Windows XP installation disc into your computer's CD/DVD drive and press the "Boot Menu" key, which is displayed on the screen when the computer first starts up. This key is usually the F12, ESC or DEL key.

Press the "R" key at the Welcome to Setup screen and wait for the Recovery Console to load.

Type "1," press the "Enter" key, enter your Administrator password and press the "Enter" key again.

Type "fixmbr," press the "Enter" key, type "exit" and press the "Enter" key a final time to fix the MBR and exit the Recovery Console, restarting your computer.
