How to Setup Wake on LAN
Wake-on-LAN is a network tool that allows you to start up a powered down computer from anywhere there's Internet access. Before using this tool, however, you'll need to make some preparations on both the target computer (the PC you plan on "waking up") and the remote computer (the PC you'll be using to wake the target computer up). Though this may seem complicated, setting up Wake-on-LAN is easy to do with the right tools and knowledge.

1
Prepare the computer you want to "wake up" remotely. Open "Control Panel" and select "Network Connections." Right-click on the primary connection you use to connect to the Internet and select "Properties." A new window will open up; click "Configure." Click the "Advanced" tab and highlight "Wake Up Capabilities. Set the value to "Magic Packet" and click "OK."

2
Write down the MAC address and IP address of the computer you'll be waking up. Open the "Start" menu, highlight "Programs," highlight "Accessories" and open the "Command Prompt" program. Type "ipconfig /all" in the Command Prompt window. Find the same network connection you configured before and write down the information in the Physical Address and IP address fields.

Download and install the Wake-on-LAN program (see Resources) onto the remote computer. Run the program by selecting it from the "Programs" sub-menu in the Start menu. Enter the MAC address and IP address of the computer you configured earlier into the respective fields in the Wake-on-LAN window. Click the "Wake Up PC" button and wait for the program to complete the process. If you configured everything correctly, the program will notify you that the target PC has powered up.
