Premium bonds are issued by the National Savings and Investments (NS&I). According to the NS&I, it is one of the largest savings organizations in the United Kingdom with nearly 27 million customers. Premium bonds have a fixed rate. The interest is not paid into each account, but given out as cash "prizes" to bondholders whose numbers are randomly selected by an Electronic Random Number Equipment also known as ERNIE (see reference 1). If you think you might have lost your premium bonds, have bonds you never knew about, don't worry: there is no time limit for claims. The NS&I has a tracing service to track your lost premium bonds or those of people for whom you are legally empowered to act.
