How to Tell the Ohm Rating on Speakers

One important component of electronics systems is resistance--an electrical property that measures a device's opposition to electrical flow. This is an important spec to consider with speakers. Speakers of the proper resistance must be paired properly with amplifiers to get the optimal output from the amplifier. If the resistance of the speaker is too high, the output of the amp is limited. If the resistance is too low, too much current may flow through the amp and it may run too hot, causing damage to the amplifier.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the speaker so you can see the back side, where you connect the speaker wires. Look for a data sticker or data plate. The ohm rating of the speaker will be listed on this sticker or plate.

    • 2

Look in the speaker's manual if Step 1 is unsuccessful. Check the specifications' page of the manual and look for the listing of the speaker's resistance rating, measured in ohms.

    • 3

Look up the manufacturer for the speaker on the Internet, if you've been unsuccessful in Steps 1 and 2. Check for manuals on the speaker, or contact the manufacturer if you cannot find the information listed on their web site.
