How to Change Open Office Writer Icons to JPG

How to Change Open Office Writer Icons to JPG thumbnail
Changing the Open Office icons only takes a few mouse clicks.

The OpenOffice Writer program, which is part of the OpenOffice software suite, has a default icon that appears on your desktop. You aren't restricted to keeping that same icon, however. If you are bored with the current icon and want to spice it up, swapping out the image with a picture saved on your computer is possible. Unfortunately the Windows operating system doesn't allow JPG files to be used as icons, so you will need to first convert the image to the "ICO" file type.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate your browser to an online JPG to ICO converter tool, such those at ConvertHub.com, Prodraw.net or CoolUtils.com. Click the "Browse" button and select the JPG file you want to use as the OpenOffice Writer icon. Click "Open."

    • 2

Select "ICO" in the "Convert To" field and then click "Convert." Select the option to download the converted icon file to your computer.

    • 3

Open the Start menu and click "All Programs." Navigate to the "OpenOffice" folder. Right-click the "Writer" icon and click "Send To." Select "Desktop (Create Shortcut)."

    • 4

Navigate to the desktop and right-click the OpenOffice Writer shortcut. Click "Properties" and then navigate to the "Shortcut" tab.

    • 5

Click the "Change Icon" button. Click "Browse" and then navigate to the folder where the converted icon file was saved earlier.

    • 6

Click the ICO image and then click "Open." Click the icon in the list of pictures and then select "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also change the icon for the Open Office Writer folder. Right-click the folder and choose "Properties." Navigate to the "Customize" tab and then choose "Change Icon" as normal.

  • The exact options for converting a JPG file to an ICO file may vary between different online conversion tools, but the general features will remain the same. For example the tool may give you the option to automatically set the height and width of the icon in pixels.
