Lightly sand the furniture with fine grit sandpaper and a sanding block. This will give you a chance to smooth the furniture so it is ready for the paint. Wipe the wood down with a damp cloth. Removing the dust from the furniture is very important before painting.

Prime the furniture with painting primer. If you are planning on painting your colorful furniture a darker color, use a gray-tinted primer. Lighter colors of furniture should be primed with white primer. Use a foam paint roller to paint the large surface areas and a paintbrush to get into corners and drawers. Allow the primer to dry completely.
