DIY Coin Sorter

Homemade coin sorter.

You can easily make your own homemade coin sorter using a common household tool and a few plastic boxes purchased from a housewares or office supply store. You can just dump in your mixed coins, shake the boxes, and the coins will sort out between the boxes according to denomination. This will speed up the process of putting coins into coin wrappers to take to the bank.

Things You'll Need

• Various-size drill bits
• 1 dime
• 1 penny
• 1 nickel
• 1 quarter
• Drill
• 5 plastic stackable boxes, lids removed

Instructions

1. Select one drill bit that is slightly larger than a dime, one that is slightly larger than a penny, one that is slightly larger than a nickel and one that is slightly larger than a quarter.

2. Separate the boxes and drill three long rows of six holes each into the bottom of one box using the dime drill bit. Set this box into the top of one of the undrilled plastic boxes.

3. Take another box and drill three long rows of six holes each into the bottom of the box using the penny drill bit. Stack this one inside the dime box.

4. Take another box and drill three long rows of six holes each into the bottom of the box using the nickel drill bit. Stack this box inside the penny box.

5. Repeat Step 4 using the quarter drill bit.

6. Add coins into the top and shake the boxes from side to side. The smaller coins will fall through the larger-than-quarter holes in the top box, leaving the quarters in the first box. As you shake the boxes, the rest of the coins will fall through the holes and sort themselves out into each box.

Tips & Warnings

• If any of the coins get stuck in the holes, use your fingers or a metal file to smooth the inside of the holes. There may be a stray plastic piece within the hole that keeps the coins from falling through.
