When comparing two different types of Internet connections, such as dial-up and 3G mobile broadband, it is important to look at real-world speed tests.There are various online sites that provide Internet speed tests to consumers free of charge (see Resources). For our purposes, we will use Speedtest.net. Speed tests are particularly useful because they give you a good idea about which service performs the best in your area.

  • Computer
  • USB 3G mobile broadband adapter
  • Dial-up modem
  • Internet subscription plan

Instructions

    • 1

      Connect your computer to the Internet using your dial-up connection. Sign into your account using the username and password you set up with your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Open your computer's web browser and navigate to "http://www.speedtest.net."

      Click on the "Begin Test" button, which is located at the top of the screen. Wait as the the test measures the your computer's upload and download speeds over your dial-up connection. Note the results on a piece of paper and disconnect from the Internet.

      Plug your 3G mobile broadband card into your computer and connect to the Internet. Return to the Speedtest.net web page and run another speed test. Wait until the test is complete and note the results. Compare the two test results against each other.
