How to Clean Old Knives
Antique knives can be purchased to enjoy or as an investment for the future. For some, an antique knife is a treasured heirloom that has been passed down for several generations. Like any other aging item, antique knives can become dirty and require a proper cleaning to maintain its value. This cleaning does not require the assistance of a professional restorer. Things You'll Need
- 2 to 4 cups of water
- Small pot
- Stove
- Unwanted toothbrush
- WD-40
- Soft cloths
- Lubricating oil

Boil two to four cups of water in a small pot. Place the blade of the knife into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Take care to not place any plastic or rubber parts of the knife into the water as they could melt or become warped.

Remove the knife, and scrub off any built-up dirt and grime with an unwanted toothbrush.

Spray the knife with WD-40 if there is any dirt that is difficult to remove. Scrub the knife with the toothbrush.

Rub the WD-40 off the knife with a soft cloth that has been soaked in water. Dry off the knife with another cloth.

Apply a thin coat of lubricating oil with a soft cloth to all over the knife, including any moving parts.
