Bamboo is an attractive and eco-friendly choice of material for furniture. It is also lightweight, sturdy and versatile. Bamboo furniture has found its way into both contemporary and traditional decor, and is used both indoors and outdoors. However, like all other furniture, bamboo requires regular care. It can be harmed both by the dry heat of the indoors and by the elements of nature outdoors. Prevention is definitely better than cure, but if your bamboo furniture has lost its shine, it is not difficult to restore it.
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum cleaner/ dust cloth
- Fine grit sandpaper
- Dish soap
- Hairdryer/ fan
- Clear polyurethane varnish
- 2 paintbrushes, 1-inch and 2-inch
- Liquid furniture wax
Dust the furniture with a dust cloth or a vacuum cleaner. Ensure you remove all loose dirt.
Sand the bamboo with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth rough surfaces and sharp edges.
Add two or three drops of dish soap to 1/2 gallon of water. Mix in 2 to 3 tbsp. of ammonia. Dip a sponge into this mixture. Wring out the sponge well, ensuring that it is not dripping wet, but is only damp.
Wipe the bamboo furniture using this sponge. Loosen dirt lodged in hard-to-reach spots using a toothbrush, and then wipe the area.
Dry the furniture completely using a hairdryer or by directing a fan to it. You can also dry it outside if it is a sunny day.
Apply a coat of clear polyurethane varnish to the bamboo furniture. Use a 1-inch brush for small areas and a 2-inch brush for larger areas. This seals the furniture and protects it from dirt.
Apply a thin coat of liquid furniture wax using a cloth. Do this after the varnish is completely dry.
