How to Make My Large Image Buddy Icon Size
If you are on an instant messenger or a social networking site, you may want to use your own custom avatar or buddy icon instead of a generic one. To make your account more personable and represent you better, use a buddy icon of yourself, or maybe a picture of a product that you sell if you own a business. If you choose a large image that you want to shrink down to the proper size for your icon, you can do so with even a simple graphic editing program.

1
Open the photo that you want to use in a graphic editing program like Adobe Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, or even a simple program such as Microsoft Paint. All three of these programs have the functions you will need to turn your photo into a buddy icon.
-
2
Click on the square selection tool within your image. Left-click and drag your mouse to select the the area on your image that you want to use as the buddy icon. For example, if this is a photograph of yourself, you may want to select your face with the square. Keep in mind that smaller details will be lost when you shrink your image, so keep the selection simple.

3
Click on the "Crop" or "Crop Selection" function in your program. This will get rid of the parts of the image surrounding the selection you made.
-
4
Re-size the image so that it is compatible with instant messenger and certain networking sites. This function is found in the "Image" drop-down menus of all three programs. Choose "Re-size..." in PaintShop Pro, "Attributes" in Microsoft Paint or "Image Size" in Photoshop. When the box pops up, enter "50 by 50" as the dimensions in the height and width boxes, and make sure it is set to "pixels." Click "OK".

5
Save your new cropped and re-sized image with a .PNG, .JPG file extension. It is now ready to be used as your buddy icon.
