How to Track Bicycles
If you are a biker, your greatest enemy is the bicycle thief, and your greatest weapons against that enemy are a solid lock to prevent theft and a registration number for the police to track it down. There are also a number of devices that can make stealing very difficult for bicycle thieves, such as tracking devices and theft deterrents.

1
Locate your bike's serial number. Most are underneath the pedal cranks, but it may be located in the following places: on the headset, near the rear gear, on top of the pedal crank, or on the seat down-tube leading to the crank. Write down this number for your records. This will be helpful in locating and identifying a stolen bicycle.

2
Register your bike with your local police and the National Bike Registry. You will need your make and model information, including serial number, tire size, frame size, value and color. They may provide you with a registration sticker to attach to your bicycle frame.

Consider bicycle tracking devices such as the Zoombak. These small, concealable devices use GPS technology to help police find bicycles minutes after the bicycles have been stolen and are surprisingly affordable.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that it is always better to prevent a bicycle theft with a U-lock or other strong bicycle lock than to track a stolen bicycle.
Be sure to read local restrictions and regulations on private use of tracking devices.
