How Do I Get a Copy of My 2007 Tax Return From the IRS?
The Internal Revenue Service can provide transcripts or complete copies of tax returns you have filed in previous years. The IRS offers two options for retrieving your tax records. Depending on the reason you need the return, and the year it was filed, you may be able to obtain the information you need quickly and inexpensively.

1
Check with your tax preparer if you had your return professionally done. He may be able to supply copies of your return faster and at little or no cost to you.

2
Decide whether you need a full copy of your return or simply a transcript. A transcript is not a copy of the return, but simply a listing of most of the line items. The IRS does not charge for transcript requests, and a transcript is sufficient for most purposes, such as credit applications. Transcripts are available for the current tax year and the past three years. The IRS charges a fee for complete copies of tax returns; these are available for the current and the past six years. If a transcript is sufficient, perform Step 3 below. If you need a complete copy of the return, perform Step 4 instead.

Request a transcript with a telephone call. Request a tax return transcript by calling the IRS at 800-829-1040 and responding to the automated system, or download the form 4506T-EZ from the IRS website (see Resources below). The form is a PDF document that allows you to enter the data on your computer. Complete and print the form and mail it to the IRS office listed on the back. The transcript will take approximately two weeks to arrive.

Request a complete copy of a return by downloading form 4506 from the IRS website (see Resources). The form is a PDF document that allows you to enter the data on your computer. Complete, print and sign the form and mail it to the IRS office listed on the back of the form. For each return requested, you must include a payment of $57 (the price in 2010). The IRS may take up to 60 days to process this request.

If you're not sure, check with your lender or other requester of your tax information to see whether a transcript will meet its needs. This may save you time and money.
