How to Convert Doc X Files

How to Convert Doc X Files thumbnail
Word processors like Microsoft Works Word Processor and other pre-Office 2007 word processors have a hard time converting the modern .docx file format.

If you are on a Mac computer or you run a version of Windows or Linux without Microsoft Office 2007 installed, having people send you .docx files can be a real pain, as you have no viable way to open or edit it. Thankfully for everyone who has encountered this problem, there are viable options for people who use any version of Microsoft Word, as well as for people who don't.

Instructions

  1. Convert Using Software

    • 1

Download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Office 2007. If downloading in Internet Explorer, click "Run" to have the file install automatically. If using Firefox or Chrome, proceed to Step 2.

    • 2

Double-click the EXE file to begin the installation.

    • 3

Click the box next to the "I agree to the terms and services" box and then click "Complete" for the install to begin. Now you can open .docx files inside of other, non-Microsoft Office programs.

    Convert Online

    • 4

Navigate to any of the many .docx to .doc conversion websites.

    • 5

Click on the "Choose File" or "Browse" button to open a new window, where you can select your .docx file.

    • 6

Select your file and click "OK."

    • 7

Click the "Convert File" button. This will automate a process where the file is converted automatically and then re-downloaded to your computer as a new .doc file.

Tips & Warnings

  • If all else fails, simply open the .docx file inside of Microsoft Office Word, click "Save As..." and save it as a .doc file.
