How to Get Linoleum Backing Off the Floor

Linoleum will leave behind a strong glue residue.

Linoleum is attached to the floor with a very strong glue to keep it from slipping. Due to the strength of the glue, the job requires a bit of manpower to completely remove the linoleum. However, it is neccessary to remove the glue when you are applying another flooring surface because it will cause the floor to buckle and leave bubbles in new linoleum.

Things You'll Need

• 4-inch putty knife
• Hot gun
• Stand-up floor scraper
• Broom
• Dustpan

Instructions

Remove the Glue Residue

1. Remove the glue and left over linoleum. Plug in the hot gun and point it at the areas that still have sections of linoleum. Scrape these parts off with the putty knife before they have time to cool down, working one section at a time. Repeat this process until you have all of the old linoleum off the floor.

2. Remove the remaining glue backing with the stand-up scraper. Push the scraper back and forth vigorously to remove the last patches of the glue. If you intend on putting down another floor it is necessary to remove all glue because it may cause bubbles or wavy spots on the new flooring surface. Make sure that the edge of the scraper is clean at all times. An unclean scraper will just pass over the glue spots you are trying to remove.

3. Remove any remaining patches of stubborn glue by using the hot gun. Work to remove the glue patches one section at a time.

4. Sweep up all of the remaining glue, dust and debris. Dispose of these waste products in a trash can.

Tips & Warnings

• Take frequent breaks. Removing the glue is labor intensive and will wear you out quickly.

• Do not touch the nozzle of the hot gun because you may get burned.
