How to Remove Hot Glue From Metal

How to Remove Hot Glue From Metal thumbnail
A hot glue gun.

Hot glue is often used as an adhesive while making of craft projects. Unfortunately, it sometimes sticks to surfaces that you don't want it to. Hot glue will not harm metal surfaces and, unlike some super glues, does not change its chemical composition in order to bond with the surfaces to which it is applied. This makes removal of the hot glue a matter of separating it from the metal surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor blade
  • Cotton ball
  • Nail polish remover

Instructions

    • 1

Let the hot glue dry completely before attempting to remove it from the metal. Glue removal is less messy when the glue has dried to a solid form.

    • 2

Slide the razor's edge between the glue and metal. Gently pull upwards to pry off the edge of the glue from the metal.

    • 3

Move the razor farther under the glue, continuing to push under the glue and pry it off, until the glue comes free of the metal.

    • 4

Soak a cotton ball in nail polish remover. Rub the cotton ball over the area where the glue was, removing any sticky residue left behind.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rubbing alcohol also works well to remove sticky residue.

  • Nail polish remover may damage painted metal. Only use it if the metal has not been painted.
