If you've got an old countertop that's structurally sound but the surface is dingy and worn, consider resurfacing instead of replacing. A new layer of laminate can be positioned over the existing surface to create the look of new countertops. You can purchase the laminate in sheets that adhere to the surface with contact cement, a quick-bonding chemical glue. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the existing countertop surface with a power pad sander, enough to de-gloss it. Wipe up the dust.

    • 2

Measure out each part the countertop surface and transfer the measurements to sheets of laminate. Add 1 inch around the perimeter of each measurement. Using a utility knife, cut out the sections by scoring and snapping the pieces.

    • 3

Apply contact cement over the backs of the pieces with a brush. Apply contact cement on the countertop surface as well. Let the contact cement sit for 15 minutes, so it's dry to the touch. (Note: Don't allow any two surfaces with contact cement on them to touch, as they will bind instantly.)

    • 4

Hold the front cut laminate piece in front of the section where it will be attached. Get it properly positioned before allowing any part of it to touch the countertop surface, bearing in mind that there will be a 1-inch overhang. Press it into place all at once.

    • 5

Run your laminate roller over the laminate to press it in place. Trim off the overhanging laminate with a power router and laminate bit.

    • 6

Set dowel rods over the countertop, positioned from front to back and placed 1 foot apart. Lay the top section of laminate on top of the dowel rods, so they prevent the laminate from touching the surface.

    • 7

Properly position the laminate over the countertop. Pull the dowel rods out from the front, one by one, pressing the laminate down to the surface as you go. When the laminate is fully sitting on the surface, roll over it with the laminate roller. Use the router to trim off the overhanging edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear goggles when using the router.
