How to Change the Address for Social Security Checks

Submit a change-of-address form to continue receiving Social Security when changing addresses.

Individuals receiving Social Security checks may change the address at which they receive them by submitting a form online, calling a toll-free number or visiting a local office of the U.S. Social Security Administration. Note that each person in a household who receives a Social Security check must submit a change-of-address request in order for checks to be forwarded to the new address. Recipients of Social Security may submit permanent or temporary change-of-address requests.

Instructions

1. 

   Make a request online at the U.S. Social Security website.

   Submit a change-of-address request online. Use your Social Security password to log in, or provide the correct information at the prompts. Make sure you enter the correct information for your current address and phone number in order to make the request effective.

2. 

   Place a request by telephone.

   Call the toll-free number, 800-772-1213, to request a change of address for the delivery of your Social Security check if you do not wish to submit your request online.

3. 

   Visit a Social Security office to place your request.

   Visit your local Social Security office if you prefer to make your change-of-address request in person.
   To find information and directions to the Social Security office that serves your area, call 800-772-1213 or visit the Social Security website and on the home page click on "Find A Social Security Office." Enter your U.S. Postal Service five-digit ZIP code and click "Locate."
