A crimp tool in car audio applications is absolutely essential.

Whether extending speaker wires or remote amplifier turn-on wires, or making basic harness connections behind a new stereo, a crimp tool is absolutely essential. Also commonly known as a Klein tool (from the main manufacturer of these tools), this combination stripper/crimper should be the first tool in any car stereo installer's arsenal. Combined with an assortment of various gauges of butt connectors, a great deal of installation tasks can be completed quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip 1/4 inch of insulation from the wire using the stripping portion of the Klein tool. Slide the butt connector of appropriate gauge over the bare wire, ensuring that the collar of the butt connector slides over the wire's jacket fully. This ensures that the wire is fully seated in the metal insert in the connector.

    • 2

Hand-twist the bare wire tightly to avoid stray wires. Hold the Klein tool in one hand, and the wire/butt connector in the other. Make sure the connector is seated centered in the notch of the crimper.

    • 3

Squeeze the Klein tool firmly, ensuring that a solid "bite" has been made in the connector. Give the connector a reasonably firm tug to ensure a good connection. Repeat for the opposite end of the connection.
