How to Convert a M4P to MP3 Using Software

Things You'll Need

• Apple now allows security-encoded M4P songs purchased through iTunes to be used on other devices, but you may still have some older M4P songs that you'd like to convert to MP3. Apple originally used M4P encoding to prevent file sharing, making song purchases from iTunes usable only on Apple devices like the iPod. The iTunes software now makes it easy and convenient to convert M4P to MP3.

Instructions

1. Open up the iTunes software. If you haven't downloaded the latest iTunes, click on "Help" in the top, left-hand corner of the program once it is open. Scroll down to "Check for updates" and click on it. It will tell you if you have the latest version of iTunes. If you do not, it will guide you through the steps of downloading and installing the latest version.

2. Import music into your iTunes library. Click on "File" in the upper, right-hand corner of the software and scroll down to either "Add File to Library" or "Add Folder to Library." Select the file or folder you'd like to add and it will automatically import in to the iTunes software.

3. Scroll through your iTunes music selection and select the M4P formatted song that you'd like to covert to MP3. Highlight the song by single clicking on it.

4. Click on the "Advanced" menu at the top of the software in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Scroll down to "Create MP3 Version" and click on it. The song will automatically start converting to MP3 format. iTunes will inform you when the conversion is complete.

Tips & Warnings

• You can also burn M4P to a CD and rip it back onto your computer in MP3 format.

• This will create duplicate copies of a song. You may want to delete the M4P format after you are finished converting the file.
