Use a small stiff toothbrush to remove mineral deposits.

An Aprilaire humidifier is a whole-house humidifier unit installed on the heating duct at the point where hot air leaves the furnace. Clean and inspect your Aprilaire humidifier at the start of every heating season to maintain proper functioning of the unit. Built-up mineral deposits distribute water unevenly on the water panel and may cause leaking from the tubing or tray. The water panel should be replaced annually, according to the manufacturer. Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the unit from the power source by unplugging from an outlet or turning off the appropriate breaker if the unit is hard-wired into the electrical system.

    • 2

Turn off water to the humidifier at the supply line. If a valve was not installed on the supply line, turn off the main water to the house while cleaning the unit.

    • 3

Move the bypass damper located on the heating duct to the "Summer" position.

    • 4

Remove the cover of the Aprilaire humidifier by pressing in on the tabs located on the sides of the unit. Gently shift the cover to determine which way the cover will move easily off the humidifier.

    • 5

Wipe out the distribution tray with a cleaning cloth to remove water and loose mineral deposits. Do not allow debris to clog the holes in the tray.

    • 6

Use a small piece of wire to clear any clogged holes by pushing the wire into the holes and wiping the debris with a cleaning cloth.

    • 7

Clean mineral deposits from the distribution tray, floats and float chamber with a stiff toothbrush. Use vinegar to loosen mineral deposits as needed. Wipe the areas with a cleaning cloth to remove all debris and vinegar residue.

    • 8

Inspect the hoses leading into and out of the unit. If there are any signs of deterioration, such as obvious mineral build-up, cracks or small holes, replace the tubing to prevent leaking during the season.

    • 9

Remove the water panel and inspect for mineral build-up. Replace as needed or at least annually as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 10

Replace the cover on the unit by positioning the tabs on the cover to the slots in the base unit. Gently press the cover back onto the base.

    • 11

Turn water back on to the humidifier.

    • 12

      Reconnect the power source.

    • 13

Move the bypass damper to the appropriate "Summer" or "Winter" position depending on the season.
