How to Paint Outdoor Iron Railings
Outdoor iron railings often look nice in their natural form but you can make them even nicer by painting them. - Newspapers
- Plastic tablecloths
- Goggles
- Work gloves
- Scraper
- Wire brush
- Drill
- Sandpaper
- Damp cloth
- Propane torch
- Metal primer
- Paint

Layer newspaper on the floor around the area where you will be working. Then cover the newspapers with disposable plastic tablecloths to create additional protection. This is necessary because rust and chipped paint are hard to sweep away.

Put on goggles and work gloves. Scrape large pieces of chipped paint or rust from the iron railings using a scraper.

Attach the wire brush onto the drill. Turn the drill on to a high setting and brush the railings.

Run sandpaper over any remaining rough areas of the railings. Then rub the iron railings with a damp cloth. Let the railings dry completely before continuing.

Warm the iron railings for a moment with a propane torch. They need to be warm but not hot.

Spray metal primer onto the railings while they are still warm. Let the primer dry completely.

Paint the iron railings with paint that is meant for metals. Paint the railings from top to bottom. Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat of paint.

Paint the outdoor railings on a nice day that isn't rainy or windy.
When warming the railings with the propane torch, don't let the iron get so hot that you cannot touch the railing.
