DIY TV Antenna Amplifier

DIY TV Antenna Amplifier thumbnail
Boost your TV signal with amplifiers.

A weak television signal coming from your TV antenna is no problem when you have an amplifier. A pre-amplifier gives your TV signal a little extra power so it can make it from your TV antenna to your house. Adding a distribution amplifier to the line then gives your television signal the strength it needs to travel to each of the televisions in your house. Using both types of TV antenna amplifiers will help ensure that the signal you receive on your TV antenna doesn't lose power as it travels through cable lines to your television.

Things You'll Need

  • Pre-amplifier
  • U-bolt
  • RG6 coax cable
  • 2 rubber boots

Instructions

    • 1

Use a U-bolt to secure the pre-amplifier to your television antenna mast. Installing the pre-amplifier to your television antenna mast means you catch the signal when it is strongest, at the antenna, and boost it so it maintains signal strength as it travels through the cable line.

    • 2

Connect one end of a small RG6 coax cable to your television antenna, and connect the other end of the cable to the "Antenna In" side of your pre-amplifier.

    • 3

Install a rubber boot over your pre-amplifier to protect the connection between your RG6 cable and the pre-amplifier. The rubber boot protects the connection so rain and dirt don't penetrate. Slide one rubber boot over the "Antenna In" side of the pre-amplifier where you already have a cable connected. Slide another rubber boot over the "Antenna Out" side of the pre-amplifier, because you won't be able to put the rubber boot in place after you connect the cable.

    • 4

Run another RG6 coax cable from the "Antenna Out" side of your pre-amplifier. After you make the connection, adjust your rubber boot to protect this connection.

    • 5

Connect the other end of your RG6 coax cable to the "Input" on your distribution amplifier. Make this connection just before you reach the junction box that feeds your television signal to the rest of the house. Usually, this junction box is in the attic or in the crawl space.

    • 6

Use a short cable that runs from the "Output" on your distribution amplifier to the "Input" on your junction box to send the amplified television signal to your junction box, which will then send the amplified signal to all of the televisions in your home.
