How to Find a Hole in an Air Bed

Air beds are used for both camping and home use. They are useful as spare mattresses when you need an extra bed, or to make camping more comfortable. However, a tear or a hole makes them almost useless because escaping air gradually deflates the bed and you're soon sleeping on the floor. Finding the hole is possible, but may take a little time, especially if it is a small hole. Once a hole is located, repairs are done using either patch kits or duct tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Inflate the air bed completely with an air pump while in a quiet room. If the bed deflates quickly, the hole is likely in a seam or around the nozzle, so check these areas by holding your hand over the nozzle or seams to feel for air escaping.

    • 2

Get in close to the bed and listen for the sound of air escaping. This will often help you determine the general location of the hole, if not allow you to define its exact position. Placing a hand over the area may help you to feel the air.

    • 3

Place 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap into a spray bottle filled with 3 cups of water. Seal the bottle and shake it to mix the solution together. Spray the suspected area of the air bed with the soapy solution to coat the area well. Work in small areas and look for bubbles to appear. When the escaping air comes in contact with the soap, it creates bubbles. When you find the hole, wipe away the excess soapy water with a clean cloth and leave the bed to dry fully before patching.

Tips & Warnings

  • To increase the flow of air or to make more noise to locate the hole, kneel or lay on the bed.

  • Be careful when looking for the hole that you don't inadvertently create another hole or enlarge the first one.
