The ads found on websites can be extremely annoying, and in some cases they can slow down your web browser or be a security risk. However, you don't have to be at the mercy of website ads. It is entirely possible to disable website ads without otherwise changing your browsing experience, giving you access to the Internet without distractions. This is possible if you browser with Internet Explorer or Firefox and is accomplished with simple, easy-to-install browser plug-ins.

Instructions

  1. Installing and Using Adblock

    • 1

Download the version of Adblock for Internet Explorer, which is called AdblockIE. It downloads like a normal installer file and is then executed. An installer program will begin and install AdblockIE. Once the installation is complete, the add-on will begin working the next time you launch Internet Explorer 8. No further setup or installation is required inside the web browser. If you use Internet Explorer 8, no further action is required. Firefox users should read on.

    • 2

Visit the Adblock Plus page on the official Add-ons for Firefox website. Click the "Add to Firefox" icon on the page. You will not be prompted to download a file. Instead, the Mozilla Firefox plug-in process will automatically download and install the plug-in for you. Once Firefox has completed this it will ask you to restart the web browser.

    • 3

Restart Firefox as was prompted by the plug-in installer. Once Firefox restarts you will be asked to add an Adblock Plus subscription. An Adblock subscription is a frequently updated profile of common online advertisements. These subscriptions are language and region specific, so make sure that you choose the Adblock subscription which is appropriate. If you don't see a subscription which seems correct, choose the "Add a Different Subscription" option. This will show a larger list with additional subscription options. Once you have found the right subscription click "Add Subscription." Adblock Plus will now block website ads automatically.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adblock Plus and AdblockIE are actually separate projects, but they have the same basic functionality.

  • Blocking website ads can be disabled by disabling the Adblock plug-in. This can be accomplished by navigating to the Add-on section of the Tools menu in both Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox.

  • Be sure to download Adblock from a legitimate source.
