How to Get Outlook Express to Work With Sympatico
Outlook Express is a stripped-down version of Microsoft's popular Outlook personal information management software. Included with older editions of Internet Explorer, Outlook Express lets users send, receive, search and manage email addresses using a point-and-click interface. It also supports the viewing and posting of newsgroup content. Though the process involves a large number of steps, users of all skill levels can configure Sympatico email accounts to work with Outlook Express.

Open Microsoft Outlook Express.

Click "Tools" in the top menu bar and select "Accounts."

Click the "Add" button and select "Mail" from the sub-menu.

Enter your name in the corresponding field and click "Next."

Enter your Sympatico email address in the corresponding field and click "Next."

Select "POP3" from the drop-down menu and enter "pophm.sympatico.ca" and "smtphm.sympatico.ca" in the "Incoming" and "Outgoing" server name fields, respectively. Click "Next" after entering this information.

Enter your Sympatico email address in the "Account name" field, enter your email password in the adjacent field, check the "Remember password" box if you want Outlook Express to do so, then click "Next."

Click "Finish."

Single-click the name of the account you just created and then click the "Properties" button.

Select the "Servers" tab.

Check the box labeled "My server requires authentication" and click the adjacent "Settings" button.

Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" and click "OK."

Select the "Connection" tab.

Check the box labeled "Always connect to this account using" and select "Local Area Network" from the adjacent drop-down menu.

Select the "Advanced" tab.

Check both boxes labeled "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)."

Enter "25" and "995" in the "Outgoing" and "Incoming" server port number fields, respectively.

Drag the slider below the "Server Timeouts" heading to the right, until the adjacent label reads "5 minutes." Click "OK."

Click "Close." You can now send and receive emails using your Sympatico email account in Microsoft Outlook Express.

Tips & Warnings
Check the box labeled "Leave a copy of messages on server" after completing the "Server Timeouts" setting if you want to be able to download and view your emails on more than one computer.
