How to Generate Leads As a Loan Officer

In many cases when you work as a loan officer your employer will provide you with a leads list. But that doesn't mean that you can't generate your own leads as well to increase your commissions. A successful loan officer is a man about town and not afraid to go out and find potential customers.

Create business cards identifying yourself as a loan officer. In addition to your basic information, list the states your mortgage company covers, any special loan programs you offer, information about your state certification as a lending official, and a website so that the customer can see that you work for a legitimate lender or broker. Mortgage lending is a business that requires you to work hard to gain the trust of the potential customer off the bat when marketing yourself.

Call real estate agencies in your area to set up a meeting with agents to discuss a reciprocal lead-generating arrangement. Agents are important marketing tools---they bring you leads when a customer comes in looking for houses but hasn't yet arranged financing. You also provide your own customers with the names of agents when they haven't yet hired one to look at homes. When you meet with each agents, dress professionally and bring marketing materials about your lending company as well as any customer testimonials or reviews of your service.

Book vending tables at community events so that residents will learn that you are a loan officer. Bring a clipboard to collect names and phone numbers of potential clients, marketing materials, and your business cards. Trade business cards with professionals you meet at networking events as well.

Create a small lead-generating website tailored for your lending business (see examples under "Resources"). All you need at minimum is an informational homepage describing your mortgage programs, an "About Us" page listing background information about your company, and a "Contact Me" page where the customer can leave his phone number or email address. Put your picture on the website near your contact information. Use Google Adwords or a similar online advertising service to bring qualified leads your website---you can target ads so that they only display when people in your area search for "mortgage lenders" or a similar keyword.
