Create a table of contents in Word in a few simple steps.

Whether you are formatting a five-page user guide or a 50-chapter book in Word, a table of contents will make your life--as well as your reader's--much easier. Microsoft developed Word with this in mind and built in several table of contents styles from which you can choose and customize. All you have to do is point, click and select the style you want.

Instructions

  1. Word 2007

    • 1

Launch Word and open your file. Click at the point where you want to insert the table of contents in your document.

    • 2

Click the "References" tab on the menu bar, then click the "Table of Contents" button. A new window will open.

    • 3

Click on one of the built-in Word table of contents formats to select it. The table of contents will appear in your document in the place you clicked earlier. If you want to customize the table of contents, click "Insert Table of Contents" instead of one of the built-in formats. A dialog box will open. Review and modify the settings you want--such as how many levels you want in the table, the tab leader style and alignment--then click "OK." The dialog box will close, and the customized table of contents will appear in your document in the place you clicked your cursor.
