How to Repair a Plaster Swimming Pool

Having a swimming pool right in your own yard is an appealing idea to many people, but plaster and concrete swimming pools all have the tendency to crack and chip over time. When the surface naturally wears away, the sealant on the surface breaks down. That allows the plaster to crack more easily. Despite the prevalence of this problem, you can repair your plaster swimming pool yourself, eliminating the time and expense of calling in a professional.

Things You'll Need

• Broom
• Heavy duty gloves
• Safety goggles
• Face mask
• Diamond blade
• Grinder
• Hose and water
• Portland cement
• White sand
• Bucket
• Wooden dowel
• Putty knife
• Trowel

Instructions

1. Clean the crack to free it of dirt and debris. Use the broom to remove loose plaster pieces. Put on all safety gear.

2. Make the crack larger to prep for the repair. Attach the blade to the grinder, place the tip in the crack, and turn it on low. Move it back and forth and up and down until it is wide and deep enough to fill with new plaster cement.

3. Soak the area to prevent moisture from being pulled out of the fresh cement to be added. Wipe away the plaster dust.

4. Create the cement mix using 3 parts Portland cement, 2 parts sand, and 1 part water.

5. Scoop a small amount onto the putty knife, and place it into the crack. Line the walls and sides of the crack, then fill it entirely with cement.

6. Trowel over the top of it to remove excess cement and even it out with the rest of the surface.
