How to Get a Wireless Signal in a House
Getting a wireless signal in a house is easily accomplished with the right equipment. A wireless router can take in the Internet signal from a cable or DSL modem and make it accessible throughout your home, and even outside. The router also has ports for wired connections. It manages the network, sending data to and from the computers. The wireless signal can be used by smartphones, computers, gaming systems, and laptops, all at the same time.

1
Place the router in a location in the house that makes it central to the computers that will use it. Choose a location near a cable or DSL outlet to avoid running wires underneath the house.
-
2
Attach the AC adapter to the router. Plug the other end into an electrical socket in the wall. Turn the router on. The power button usually is located on the front or back of the unit.

3
Run an Ethernet cable from the port on the back of the cable or DSL modem to the input on the router marked "Internet" or "Source."
-
4
Attach any computers that use a wired connection to the empty ports on the back of the router. Perform any software setup as described in the router's owners manual.
-
5
Connect to the Internet with all of your devices. Laptops should connect automatically. If not, click on the networking icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Connect to a Network." Smartphones also should connect on their own. Desktop computers require a USB adapter to connect wirelessly.

Tips & Warnings
Wireless connections often reach beyond the walls of a house. Try out the laptop on the deck or porch to see if the connection works there.
A wireless connection sometimes reaches so far that neighbors also can use it. Make sure the network is not compromised by setting up a security system for the network. Most router default setups are unsecured connections.
