How to Extend a Tree Pruner
Maintaining the landscape around a home can be rewarding and enjoyable. However, when it comes to maintenance involved with trees, such as removing damaged limbs, it can prove to be a little frustrating. This is where a tree pruner earns its keep. Typically featuring a lopping cutter attached to the end of an extension pole, pruners help make a difficult job much easier when operated correctly. Part of using a pole pruner involves correctly extending the pole to a length that allows you to reach limbs in a tree. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Put on protective equipment including safety glasses, gloves and a hard hat. Working with limbs located several feet above you dictates that you wear the proper safety equipment to help prevent possible injury from falling debris or limbs.
-
2
Hold the tube of the pole pruner in one hand and turn the twist lock located near the lopping head of the pruner. The twist lock, when loosened, allows the inner tube to slide out from the outer tube. In most cases the twist lock ring will need to be turned to the right to loosen. However, this can vary based on model and manufacturer.

3
Pull the inner tube and lopping head out to extend the pole. Use an estimate to initially determine how long the pole should be. Tighten the twist lock by turning the locking ring in the direction opposite that which loosened the lock.
-
4
Stand to one side of the limb and never directly beneath. If a limb should fall, this will help avoid an injury. Hold the pole pruner securely with both hands placed about 3 feet apart. This will help with stability and control.
-
5
Place the lopping head against the limb to check for correct length. If the length needs to be adjusted, lower the pruner, loosen the twist lock and adjust the length. Make sure to tighten the ring back securely.
