The Goldwing is a full-dress touring motorcycle offered by Honda. The Goldwing was introduced as a 1975 model, although did not come with a factory mounted trunk and saddlebags until the 1979 model year. The bike went through many changes and engine upgrades through the years until the GL1800 was introduced as a 2001 model. Honda redesigned the GL1800 in its entirety, and made standard a new 1.8 liter engine, which was larger than the engines in some economy cars. The plastic windshield in your GL1800 is subject to scratching if it is not cleaned properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Terrycloth towel or washcloth
  • Bucket of clean water
  • Plastic windshield cleaner
  • Cotton cloth

Instructions

      Saturate a terrycloth towel or washcloth with clean water from a bucket.

      Wipe the terrycloth across the windshield in an up and down or side to side motion. Avoid using a circular motion as this will eventually create whorls on your windshield.

      Allow the water to soak into the dried bugs and other contaminants on your windshield for a few minutes.

      Wipe the windshield again with the terrycloth to remove to softened road debris from the windshield. Wring the cloth out in clean water and re-soak and wipe the windshield again if necessary to remove stubborn dried on bugs.

      Spray a plastic windshield cleaner directly to the windshield while it is still wet. Wipe the windshield in an up and down or side to side motion until it is dry with a soft cotton cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry a wet terrycloth towel or washcloth in a re-closable plastic sandwich bag with you while traveling. This way you can clean your windshield whenever needed and where water is not available.

  • Do not use an alcohol or ammonia based glass cleaner on your windshield or you could damage the polycarbonate coating, subjecting the windshield to scratching and pitting.

  • Do not use gas station squeegees or any paper products to wipe or clean your windshield, or you could scratch the finish.

  • Never leave the gas pump nozzle unattended while refueling your Goldwing. If fuel should splash out of the nozzle and onto your windshield, it could cause splotches, ruining the windshield.

  • If cleaning your windshield using the above steps does not remove haze, scratches, or whorls, you may need to replace your windshield to avoid to low visibility issues when traveling towards setting sun, rain, or oncoming headlights.
