Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area to be stenciled by making sure there is no loose or flaking paint and that the surface is clean. If the area requires a fresh coat of background paint, allow the painted surface to dry completely. If a border or a defined area is to be stenciled rather than an entire space, make a chalk line to mark the area. Use a ruler or yard stick and a level if needed to ensure a straight registration mark.

    • 2

Spray the back side of the stencil with stencil adhesive and press it firmly against the area marked. Start at the least noticeable point in the room.

    • 3

Pour a small amount of stencil paint onto a palette. Dip the brush or sponge lightly into paint. Wipe excess paint on a lint free kitchen towel. Gently dot paint layer by layer until desired color is achieved. If you are using more than one color, wait for the first to dry before applying the second. Start with the lightest color. Wash stencil between color changes with hot soapy water.

    • 4

Wash your materials in hot, soapy water when the project is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stencil painting is almost a dry brush style of painting. Too much paint on the brush can cause paint to bleed under the stencil and make the project look messy.
