How to Install Stereos in the 1998 Dodge Neon
The 1998 Dodge Neon was equipped with a factory-installed AM/FM stereo with cassette deck. Optional stereos are available including a CD player. Choose a single-DIN aftermarket stereo to replace a malfunctioning stock stereo. Single-DIN is a standard stereo size that will fit into the Neon's stereo dock without the need for customizing the dashboard. Purchase the wiring-harness adapter and an installation collar for a proper fit in the mounting dock. You can install the stereo in less than one-half hour's time and save the cost of a professional installation.
Things You'll Need
- Wrench or pliers
- 10 mm socket and drive
- Stereo installation sleeve
- Flat screwdriver
- Wiring-harness adapter
Instructions

1
Lift the hood of the Neon and remove the negative battery cable from the negative lead post of the battery. Use a wrench or pliers to loosen the bolt securing the cable to the lead post.
-
2
Grab the plastic dashboard panel that surrounds the stereo and climate-control knobs at the two lower corners. Pull the panel away from the dash until it snaps free from the stereo assembly.
-
-
3
Remove the bolts on either side of the stereo with the socket and drive.
-
4
Unplug the two wiring connectors from the back panel of the factory stereo. Pull the antenna cable from the outlet on the right rear panel of the unit.
-
5
Place the new stereo's installation sleeve into the stereo dock of the Neon. Use a flat screwdriver to fold the tabs on the inside of the sleeve (near the front opening). The tabs will hold the sleeve into place within the Neon's stereo dock.
-
6
Pull the stereo wiring from the back of the stereo dock and connect the two plastic wire connectors to the connectors of the wiring-harness adapter.
-
7
Plug the wiring-harness adapter connectors into the corresponding outlets on the back of the new stereo. Plug the antenna cable into the antenna outlet on the rear panel of the new radio.
-
8
Replace the plastic trim panel around the stereo and climate-control knobs. Align the top edge of the panel and press the bottom of the panel until it snaps back into place on the Neon's dashboard.
-
9
Replace the Neon's negative battery cable onto the battery post and tighten the cable's bolt with the wrench.
